miraDry Vs Botulinum Toxin for Excessive Sweating

Botulinum toxin is a very effective and popular treatment to temporarily stop underarm sweating. Botulinum toxin works by blocking the nerves responsible for activating your sweat glands. The effects can last from 4 to 6 months and there’s zero downtime involved making it a very convenient procedure.

Aside from underarm sweat, botulinum toxin can also be applied to other areas of excessive sweating such as your palms, soles of your feet, or even your forehead. Botulinum toxin successfully treats sweaty palms in 80 – 90% of cases. It can also reduce forehead sweating by 75% for about five months in most cases.

miraDry offers a more permanent solution to combat underarm sweat by heating up and destroying the sweat glands with thermal energy. It’s proven to reduce sweat production in the underarms by 82% whilst drastically reducing odour too. Because only 2% of your sweat glands are located under your arms, the rest of your body will continue to sweat as normal so there’s no compensatory sweating.

There is a short downtime period after the miraDry treatment but unlike botulinum toxin, you will only need up to two treatments - making it a permanent solution.

miraDry is currently only approved for use on the underarms, therefore, it cannot be used on the palms, feet, or forehead as botulinum toxin can.

So when choosing between botulinum toxin or miraDry, there are multiple things for you to consider. For those who excessively sweat in places other than their underarms, botulinum toxin is the way to go. For those who are looking for an underarm sweat reduction only, you might be drawn to miraDry’s permanence.

Both treatments are highly beneficial and we offer both in our Excessive Sweating Clinic. Email us info@rmauk.com to book a video consultation with Dr Chris and Nurse Emily.
